Acupressure therapists work in spas, cruise ships, clinics, fitness centers, hospitals, wellness centers, doctor`s offices, corporations, professional sports organizations, and private practices. Acupressure schools train students to help bring patients` bodies into harmonious balance. They teach about the healing ability of acupressure, which relaxes the body, promotes stress reduction, and strengthens the immune system. Students learn to use acupressure to alleviate acute and chronic conditions including spinal-muscular pain, sinus complications, arthritis, and headaches. It is good for fatigue, as well, and acupressure schools teach it as a preventative therapy.

 Two techniques of acupressure that acupressure schools teach are the "shiatsu," and the "jin shin." Shiatsu acupressure, the most commonly used therapy, is notated for its vigorous and firm pressure application; while, the jin shin acupressure technique is a more gentle form -- whereby points are softly held for a moment or two. A typical acupressure session is done in a relaxing environment and does not require removal of the client`s clothing.
Ancient pressure point methods are taught at the acupressure institute; all using the same trigger points. Varying rhythms, pressures, and techniques create different styles of acupressure. Shiatsu, for instance, the most well-known style of acupressure, can be quite vigorous, with firm pressure applied to each point for only three to five seconds, while the jin shin style of acupressure gently holds each point for a minute or more. We teach a variety of tuina (tui na) Chinese massage styles on tables and other healing Asian bodywork techniques on floor mats.
Since acupressure does not require the use of needles like acupuncture, it is generally classified as massage and training may be offered through massage schools or independent seminars for bodyworkers. Some massage schools offer acupressure as a specialization. Training usually includes the basics of tcm, the organ systems, yin/yang concepts, and so on. Acupressure classes may also qualify as continuing education units for massage therapists.
