Acupressure, derived from traditional Chinese medicine, is a form of treatment for pain that involves pressure on particular points in the body known as "acupressure points".

Acupressure is the art of identifying and releasing the congested energy centers making way for a symmetric flow of energy. It involves placing physical pressure, by hand, elbow, or with the aid of various devices, on different pressure points on the surface of the body, which may be far distant from the symptom, related by what is called the meridian system, to bring about relief through greater balance and circulation of energies in the body. While pressure is put in the body it helps in removing the blocks and creates energy. Acupressure is almost like traditional massage, but specific points are massaged in a circular motion. The massage is done through rubbing, vibration etc for 5-10 minutes. Acupressure is a very powerful technique and most of the ailments are relieved by it. Acupressure promotes calmness and relaxes the body. Don`t apply too much pressure during treatment.

The healing process through Acupressure is quite quick and you can feel the energy flow in a matter of few minutes. The pressure applied on a certain position helps in removing the toxins and makes the blood flow smoothly. Unlike acupuncture, there are no needles used in acupressure. In fact you will find that many martial art artists will regularly carry out massage to their own acupressure points in their routines to help remove any from their own meridian system and claiming that it has helped to enhance their circulation and flexibility and ensuring that they keep their pressure points "soft" or even less vulnerable to attack from another source.

You will find that treatments may or many not be used in the same area of the body as where the targeted symptom is. The theory behind this is that the selection of the points that are used on the body and their effectiveness should work by stimulating the body`s meridian system which helps to bring about the relief of any symptoms by rebalancing.

Acupressure can be very useful in helping with such conditions as headache, nausea and nervousness. A further review carried out found that the use of massage was able to provide some long term benefit in the treatment of lower back pain and it seems that the use of acupressure or pressure point massage techniques help to provide more relief to the patient concerned that the classic form of massage, but more research needs to be carried out to confirm these results.

Acupressure is a safe and gentle alternative therapy used to relieve symptoms from many common disorders. Unlike some forms of Western medicine, this therapy does not involve the use of any invasive techniques. A skilled practitioner simply uses their thumbs and fingers (sometimes the elbow) to exert pressure to specific body points.

Origin and Concept of  AcupressureUnlike Western medicine that usually addresses a specific symptom or disease, Oriental medicine views the entire body in terms of Qi, its energy. When Qi is flowing smoothly throughout the body, good health is enjoyed. However, if this flow of energy is blocked acupressure can release Qi to work toward restoring the body`s balance. Qi flows through Channels located near the surface of the body. Another name for Channels is Meridians, or Meridian Points. There are 12 Channels linked to specific organs, such as the liver, heart, and kidneys. Acupoints, or pressure points are located on the Channels (Meridians). When precise pressure is exerted onto an acupoint, the gate is opened and Qi flows through. Think of Qi in terms of blood circulating continually throughout the body to sustain life. If blood flow is blocked or interrupted, the affected part may starve from lack of oxygen and nutrients. The body responds by sending a warning signal in the form of symptoms. Some of these symptoms might include pain, inflammation, muscle spasm, or tingling sensations.

A `few` of the conditions that benefit from acupressure include elimination/ reduction of back pain, headache, fatigue, anxiety, stress and tension, feelings of melancholy, and immune system deficiencies. Studies have shown that certain type of pain is linked with feelings of anxiety and worry. Often back and joint pain is simply caused by poor posture. The neck is especially susceptible due to head and neck range of motion. Trauma can lead to soft tissue damage. Certain acupoints between the cervical spine and the top of the shoulder when treated with acupressure relieve pain. When the flow of blood is enhanced, toxins are flushed away, and oxygen and healing nutrients are provided.

Stress is a part of human existence. When an environmental event; social, professional or familial challenge exceeds the capacity to adapt, then stress develops. As a result, pain is blocked and the flow of blood and oxygen to the affected area is increased. This causes the muscles to relax and promotes healing.

Acupressure is used to relieve symptoms by applying pressure to one or several acupressure points. It is a system that anyone can learn and practice on themselves knowing that they will not do any harm. The best way to learn acupressure is to practice applying pressure to some of the points on yourself so as to learn to experience the difference between the various points in terms of pain or any other sensation that you may feel. It`s really only by practicing on yourself initially can you begin to get a good sense of how these points can relate to different symptoms.

The internal organs play a dual role in promoting and maintaining health: generating and regulating energy for each other. Acupressure philosophy is based on the same principles as Acupuncture. By using pressure instead of needles, acupressure works to stimulate specific reflex points located along the lines of energy which run through the body, called meridians. There are 14 main meridian lines, each of which corresponds to an individual organ of the body. When the vital energies are able to flow through the meridians in a balanced and even way the result is good health. When you experience pain or illness it is an indication that there is a block or leak in the energy flow within your body.

There is a natural source of healing power in everyone. When this healing power is activated, it triggers a series of intricate internal processes, which produces a Healing Response. Pain or injury to your body alerts your body that help is needed. This is when the Healing Response begins by the unleashing of endorphins into your blood to help heal the affected area. The heart rate increases, blood pressure is altered and the delivery of endorphins and nutrients required for repair is excellerated. This speeds up the elimination of toxins from the damaged area, which also promotes healing.

Acupresure induces this Healing Response by simulating injury through pressure. When applied to specific sore points along the meridians at different points for different conditions, this pressure tricks the body into thinking it has been damaged. The body then produces endorphins to relieve distress in the organs and systems corresponding to that Acupressure point. While the body is healing at the point of pain, it produces a Healing Response all along the meridian. Electric stimulation is commonly applied to acupressure points instead of pressure to induce the healing response. It is easier to apply and often works faster.

The goal with Acupressure is to learn the points that will produce the Healing Response for the conditions we want to fix. Through repetitive Acupressure treatments, the body learns a new and effective way to activate the Healing Response on its own and increases the power to heal itself without any outside intervention.
