Magnetic healings in Ancient Times
Interest of Human Race with magnets has been as inevitable as with any other discovery. Many civilizations have given utmost prominence to the use of these objects with the ability to cast a difference in our life and well being.

CleopatraAncient Egyptians used to refer Magnets as `lodestones`, and used them widely to prolong life and improve health. It is said that Cleopatra wore a polished lodestone on her third eye, in the belief that it helped maintain her youth and beauty. In more recent times, Paracelsus (1493-15410) considered to be the father of modern medicine, believed that the life force of the body was most influenced by the force found in magnets. The belief took many strong manifestations in Europe, Russia, China, Japan and many other countries. Many civilizations are replete with the incorporation of Magnetic stones in their Daily and therapeutic life.

There are Many references of Magnetic Healing in Ancient Times. Many anecdotal accounts in Bible vouches for many such Happenings as miracles.

The Seven Wise Men of the East who followed the Bright star to reach the barn where Jesus was Born are known to later bestow upon him the knowledge of healing the sick and the infirm. Jesus Christ is famously known to possess the faculty of `human magnetism` to heal suffering mankind. The descriptions such as miraculous transformation of a leper into a healthy human being held this faith very strong.

"Thou shall be cured", is too well known to need elaboration. History is replete with numerous instances of the above kind, which quite unfortunately has been dubbed as "faith cures" by the modern scientific man.

The prime reason for this kind of notion was the unavailability of advanced scientific equipments to conduct proper studies and proofs. The mystery surrounding such miracle phenomena of inexplicable cause and effect has held man in ever-growing awe, Doubts and skepticism. Admittance of no logical or scientific explanation in terms of the parameters then known to him further labeled Magnetic Therapy as superstition. This resulted in quite a decline and setback in the effective therapies which could have grown with leaps and bounds.

As the resources for scientific discoveries became advanced and universal forces allowed themselves to be reveal a to man through better understanding and scientific discoveries, the latter began not only to appreciate the phenomena but also to be inspired to use them to his advantage.

Man since the ancient times was obsessed by the unknown and baffling forces of diseases which attacked him from time to time. The wisest among the ancients, therefore, looked up and tested all substances, howsoever innocuous, that promised to possess even the slightest therapeutic property. With their wisdom, intuition and devotion, they acquired the knowledge of almost all-natural herbs, shrubs and trees, animals like snakes, scorpions, honey-bees and minerals and described these in such astounding detail that they hold good even today.

In the land of Ancient India, Charaka, in his masterly treatise, the "Charaka Samihta" later asserted, "There is nothing in the world that does not have a therapeutic utility."

The practitioner of Ayurveda and natural therapists saw the semblance of the positive therapeutic forces of each agent in the negative morbid forces of a disease and hence sought a rational cure of the human organism. Their knowledge being constantly guided by sincerity of purpose and devotion.

During the Vedic period of around 4000 BC, the most ancient Hindu scriptures the Vedas were born which set forth all guidance on all aspects of life, religion, customs, traditions and cures of diseases through various healing agents. The ancient Indians believed in the healing properties of magnet and therefore, used it for curing many diseases. Many ancient Vedic scriptures contain references to the use of magnets in the treatment of various diseases. These very textual works also lay down explicit guidelines for the use of north and south poles of magnets, each pole dealing with a certain specific disease.

On the similar lines, another ancient Indian work, Atharva Veda, a scholarly treatise which formed the basis for Ayurveda (also called as science of life), includes a number of mantras in chapters 1 to 4,which gives the details for usage of magnets for stopping bleeding in women, sterility, etc. The magnets in Sanskrit are referred as Ashman or Ashna.

Just like the fact that the Indian scholars did vast and intricate studies on Magnets, Many advanced civilizations by then were also dealing with the same exploration and usage.

The Greeks in 800 BC were familiar with the properties of the magnet or the lodestone as it came to be called. These healing properties are detailed out by Greek scholars like Plato, Homer and Aristotle in their masterly works. A famous Swiss alchemist and- mystic, Parcelsus went very deep in this particular knowledge of Magnetism. He attributed numerous properties to the magnet and asserted that `"There are-qualities in a magnet and one of these qualities is that the magnet also attracts all humors that are in the human system. The magnet, therefore, is highly useful in inflammations, influxes and ulceration, in diseases of bowels and. uterus and in internal as well as external diseases."

Parcelus, with his-systematic-experiments and observations paved the way for the modem art of magnetic healing. Therefore he is often and correctly described as the `father of Magnetotherapy`.

The ancients attributes some more qualities to Magnets as:

  • The lodestone could draw out path from the body by dialating the vessels.

  • They could act as a purgative agent.

  • Magnets could help in quickly healing wounds.

  • They could also cure many diseases like gout, dropsy and hernia.

  • The king of Zeilan went so far as to demand that his meat be served only in the lodestone dishes. He strongly believed that this very act maintained his youth and vigour.

One of the most interesting belief of early times remained that the magnet has a `soul` as it moved iron. Therefore it was used to detect infidelity in women, who, according to the ancient belief, could not lie comfortably in bed with their husbands when the magnet was placed under their pillows.

The magnet and magnetism played were a common application in the life of the people of the early Egyptian civilization. The Egyptian mummies of Pharaoh, which have been the preservers of culture through the ages, have in them a strategic arrangement of magnetism which prevents their degeneration and decay. Not only that, Numerous wonderful phenomena have been attributed to the pyramidal dimensions which are based on certain subtle laws of magnetism.

This concept was further explored and it was found that even the curd, wines and other perishable foods kept in the man-made wooden pyramids made with dimensional accuracy derived from the knowledge of the ancient pyramids, keep well for incredibly long periods. Just on the same lines as the Pharos mummies are preserved under the pyramids.

Cleopatra, the legendary princess of Egypt (69 to 30 BC), is said to have constantly worn a small magnet as an amulet which is believed to be the secret of her enviable beauty and unfading youthful charm. Similarly, numerous kings and queens wore magnets in their crowns and attires with the fond belief of everlasting health and vitality, which the magnet was supposed to bestow.

The magnetic harmony of the human body has been studied and incorporated in a very ancient Hindu custom, according to which - a person in the last moments of his life should be made to tie down on the ground (not on the cot) in the north-south direction-head towards north and feet towards south to induce magnetic parallelism between the earth and the body. This was believed to bring peace, tranquillity, and mitigation of pain and less suffering while leaving the ephemeral world. The custom is even practiced in modern times, though in much rarity.

The ancient work of literature clearly details out the nature and quality of magnetism of the earth and other celestial bodies in the universe along with their vivid effects on human beings. The age old custom of fasting on new moon and full moon days stems from the observation that the lunar effect on human brain on these days when all the martial humors in the body are greatly attracted by the moon is tremendous and can lead to severe mental or emotional problems. The fasting on these days checks the over-abundance of the body fluids and avoids all abnormal effects.

For similar reason that our conduct might not be entirely unaffected, the ancient Hindu scriptures forbid the performance of certain occult practices on the first, eighth and fourteenth days of the lunar months. As the results obtained on these days (of exalted lunar magnetic activity) may be erroneous or faulty.

The very first record of the discovery of a magnet dates back to 600 B.C. Its said that a shepherd-boy named Magnes who while roaming about on Mount Ida was awe-struck with the effects of a lodestone on his iron-capped staff. The word Magnet could be derived from that shepherd`s name.

Another theory states that the word "Magnet" is derived from the name of the place Magnesia in Asia Minor, where this stone was to be found in abundance. This discovery led to multiple scientific and the early centuries of the Christian era witnessed the emergence of a magnet compass in China for navigation.
