Career in Reiki
More and more of world population is discovering the value of alternative therapies. Recent studies are showing that growing number of people are turning to alternative therapies for better Medicare. The therapies most used are meditation, touch therapy (such as Reiki), guided imagery, spiritual healing, chiropractic, hypnosis, homeopathy, acupuncture, herbal cures, and folk remedies.

To assist with Reiki being a professionally oriented course is the fact that it is a very organized study with certification given to qualified healers. Nowadays reiki is spreading through distance learning program as well. Many healers take the course to heal themselves and their near ones. But many also choose to be professionals. To be a Reiki healer one should assess following prerequisite qualities:

  • He should be comfortable with close contact with clients.

  • He must be patient, polite, sensitive and non-judgmental.

  • Must be able to empathize with clients to understand what they are going through.

  • The healer must have a genuine desire to help others.

  • He must be skilled with verbal communication to explain the treatment to clients.

  • More than that he should have good listening skills.

  • He should be able to keep accurate records of treatment.

  • He should be endowed with a gentle, light and comfortable touch.

  • He should have confidence in his client, and at the same time must be able to inspire confidence in them.

  • There is no minimum age for training but for the need to be able to win clients` confidence a mature and caring attitude is essential. A background or qualifications in counseling, other complementary therapies or health care may be useful. Practical experience of working with people with a variety of physical and emotional problems would provide insight into this work.

  • There is no one single regulated training programme or certification course, which must be followed in order to become a professional Reiki practitioner. There are a number of ways to train in Reiki. The method one chooses will depend on which system of Reiki one wish to pursue.

  • Prior to beginning a course of training one needs to personally experience some form of Reiki healing to show an understanding of the treatment and procedures.

  • Reiki Training
In Traditional schools and training, learning is undertaken by studying with a Reiki master (teacher). This involves a series of `attunements` or initiations, which are procedures performed by the Reiki master. The aim of the attunement is to activate certain energy centers within the trainee to allow the universal life energy to flow freely. This harmonises the trainee with Reiki energy so they can receive and pass it on to others. Subjects covered include self-healing techniques, how to heal others, hand positions, distance healing and meditation.

To achieve full Reiki master status usually takes at least three years during which time one is expected to have practiced Reiki regularly.
A number of colleges also offer Reiki courses at introductory level, through to advanced. It is possible to achieve a certificate or diploma awarded by certain established exam bodies. Certifications are given accordingly as the student passes out from one level to another.

Nowadays, complete Reiki home learning systems are also growing up. These are to facilitate people who are either unable to attend a live course, or who prefer to learn and practice at their own pace. It may seem a little strange to suggest that Reiki can be learned at a distance. A thorough combination of comprehensive eBooks, audio CDs and DVD, practical exercises, distant attunements and ongoing support by e-mail provides as much coverage as a `live` course. This learning programme is still encountering the validity and skepticism.

In these courses, the students are given a project to carry out. Once they are done on regular basis (Practising on yourself and/or others), notes on experiences are kept accordingly. The teacher then reviews the progress at regular intervals. Hence, students in the distance training or home study program may get far more hands-on practice in using energy across the time.

    Reiki practice
Many Reiki healers offer other therapies such as reflexology and aromatherapy, or they may combine it with another career such as nursing. There are limited opportunities to work in a variety of medical settings such as hospitals, hospices, or attached to a GP surgery or natural health centre. The most probability being that practitioners may work from home, from a rented room in a clinic or other premises, or from several of these places.

Practitioners need to be prepared to market their business if they are self-employed, often working long hours at first until they have built up their practice. Many a times free reiki sessions for the sake of public services are also given to establish practice. There is no set working hours. Unsocial hours may be worked to accommodate their clients.

Healers are likely to work in a quiet room where their clients can lie comfortably on a couch. Some offer a service in clients` homes. Reiki healers spend a lot of time on their feet, bending over clients. As far as money issue (and an important one) is concerned, some practitioners do not charge money and this is fine if that is their decision as everyone has the right to charge whatever they want or to charge nothing at all. However, it is often better for the client if they are able to give something in return. They are not paying for the Reiki energy, which is free, but for the time and the effort the healer has put forth to learn Reiki. Payments are also honored and then patient has far more involvement in the process. Also, he doesn`t feel indebted.

For professional practitioners, a good rule of thumb is to charge about the same for a standard Reiki session as others in the area are charging for massage. A standard Reiki session will usually last about 45 minutes to an hour and a half. One can start at a lower rate in the beginning, if that feels comfortable and increase it as the confidence and reputation grow.

People approach a reiki healer with many different problems, difficulties and illnesses sometimes as a last resort. Seeing them improve over time, watching them grow, gain confidence and become more trusting of life is a reward in itself. That also includes occasionally witnessing miracles and transformations. Watching one`s (healer`s) life grow and develop as continual immersion in Reiki transforms attitudes, values and beliefs is also a rewarding experience. All this is the promise of a developing Reiki practice.

Reiki is a truly wonderful gift and while some take Reiki training to use on themselves and with friends and family, many feel inspired to share it with a much wider circle. Not only can it provide you with a source of income, there are spiritual experiences that can be much more meaningful.
