Reiki Attunement
Reiki is a universal force within everyone`s reach. But not everyone has the ability to be a channel of this life energy. This is where the process of attunement comes in. A master of reiki passes on this ability to the would be practitioner through the ritual of "attunement". In this ceremonial process the Reiki master uses the Reiki symbols and other gestures in a prescribed way. This ritual creates an energy pattern around the recipient of the attunement, which entrains (or attunes) their energy field to the energies represented by the symbols. The attunement is permanent, thus imparting the recipient the ability for being a Reiki practitioner for life. This happens only if the master uses the symbol for the "subconscious". If this symbol is not used the entrainment is temporary only. In essence, the attunement procedure is a ceremony of Reiki spirit.

During the attunement/initiation process the Reiki master helps the student adjust to the Reiki energy. This energy creates an open "channel" for the cosmic or universal life energy. From the top of the initiated person head and through this "channel" the energy flows down through the body and back out through the hands when Reiki is given to the self or the other person. Although different schools have different methodologies and numbers of attunements given on each level, basically there are three levels in which the attunement are imparted to the person to be initiated in this level.

Reiki 1 - Benefits physical body
The Reiki 1 attunement seems to mainly benefit the physical body in opening it up to channel more Reiki energy. Once attuned the practitioner will never lose the ability to use Reiki. In Reiki 1 the history of Reiki and the hand positions are taught. During the first degree initiation the student learns different hand positions to balance and align self / client`s physical mental and emotional bodies. It helps to relieve stress, tension and gives one an overall sense of well being. Reiki can also be very effective in bringing down inflammation and swellings. Energy channelisation is mastered by trials and practice. There might be more or less than one to four initiations involved. A Reiki attunement generally takes about 20-30 minutes and is a very relaxing and beneficial experience, both for the master and the student.

Reiki 2 - Benefits subtle body
The Reiki 2 attunement gives an even higher possible level of energy vibrations in the student. Here one is also introduced to 3 Reiki symbols: The Power Symbol, The Mental Symbol and The Distance Symbol. These symbols can be used to help focus energy for specific purposes. During the second degree initiation the student learns how to work with ancient Tibetan symbols and their meaning and how to do absentee healings with the Reiki Technique. For Reiki 2 there is normally only one initiation. The Reiki 2 attunement seems to have the greatest effect on the subtle body namely Aura.

Reiki Master
This initiation is given to attune persons who have Reiki 2 and wish to be able to teach and initiate others into Reiki. In this process the vibration level of energy is once again raised and the Master symbol is taught. During the third degree initiation practitioner receives a more in depth understanding of the symbols one has been working with and how to attune others. This is the Master Teacher level and upon completion of the requirements, the practitioner is authorized to do attunements. After this final attunement, the practitioner is more able to skillfully handle and direct his energies, and to learn and develop new techniques. To become Reiki Master one does not have to dedicate oneself to teaching others, the Reiki Master level can be taken for own pleasure or benefit as well.
