Reiki Symbols
Reiki symbols are the Japanese forms, which have inherited the rich vibrational and esoteric energies of Sanskrit language. They are the powerful tools in Reiki healing, and are used either to enhance, or to address a particular effect. They are known as Shirushi in Japanese, and were kept as a sacred secret from the uninitiated for decades. The initiated ones were taught their meaning, usage and mantra to make them effective. Normally the initiation in symbols is given at stage two (Second Degree). The symbols have their own consciousness, and it is possible to meditate on them and receive guidance on how to use them directly from the symbols themselves. There are four principal Symbols used in Reiki for effective healing.

Cho Ku ReiThe Power Symbol (Cho Ku Rei)
Chokurei refers to an Imperial Proclamation or Order ("by command of the Emperor"). Yet, written in a different set of kanji, it can be translated as `direct spirit(s)`, or more conceptually as something like: `In the presence of the spirit(s). Power symbol is used to amplify the flow/ strength of Reiki. It can also be used to assist in focusing Reiki more intensely at a given location, or to a specific intent. It is meant specially to heal in the physical sense. It has much utilization in various techniques. The symbol can be used as an "energy cleansing" or "energy blessing" for food, drinks, or possessions. It may also be employed as a seal or amulet of protection.

It can be invoked in the beginning of the treatment for strong flow of reiki; or it can be used in the end to "Seal" the treatment. And while in `western` forms of Reiki, the symbol may be used in conjunction with one or more of the other symbols, to increase their potency; in `Japanese` lineages, it is primarily utilized in a stand-alone sense.

The `Mental-Emotional Healing` symbol (Sei He Kei)
Sei He KeiThe origin of this symbol can be traced to Buddhist traditions and Sanskrit origin. This symbol is used for mental and emotional healing, protection, purification, clearing and balancing. It deals with the issues often hidden in the subconscious mind (the emotional body) and/or the conscious mind (the mental body). Issues such as dealing with deep seeded emotional wounds, mental patterns, habits, addictions, and negative thoughts are healed when empowered with this sign. Relationship problems and issues steming from them, emotional and mental distress such as nervousness, fear, depression, anger, sadness, can be dealt very easily when this symbol is incorporated in appropriate techniques. The positive affirmations are more deeply embedded in such condition. Also, the emotional release for the person being treated gets easy. The mental and emotional healing symbol balances the right and left brain.

The Distant Healing Symbol (Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen) Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen
This Symbol is technically not a `symbol` per se, but rather is a stylized combination of five kanji characters. Among when, one of the clearest translations of "Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen" is "Correct Thought (or Correct Mindfulness) is the essence of being". This symbol transmits Reiki energy across time and space. This symbol can covey Reiki across the room, across town, to other parts of the country or anywhere in the world to other people, animals, plants and even distant future. Distance is no barrier, nor is time. One can even send Reiki into the "past," to heal issues from earlier in this lifetime, or to past life issues that affect you or others now. The distant symbol may also be used as a means of assisting interaction with, deity, spirits of place, or ancestral spirits (or ancestral energy-patterns).

This symbol connects to the Akashic Records, the life records of each soul, and so it can be used to heal karmic patterns or tendencies that have manifested as disease in the body or that have resulted in mental or emotional pain or distress.

Master symbol (Dai Ko Myo)
Dai Ko MyoThe word dai means `Great` and kô myô, while translates as `Bright Light`, alluding to `Enlightened Nature` or the Radiance of a being or deity. Therefore, the essence of master is the Light of the Buddha, the Light of the Awakened Heart. It signifies expanded wisdom and clairvoyance. In form of the `Master` symbol it is the very encapsulation of the Reiki phenomenon itself. According to practitioners of a great many Reiki styles, Master Symbol represents the integration of energies of the previous three symbols at a subtle level.

The primary use of this Symbol is for passing of Reiki attunements to others. It may also be employed as a meditative focus. This symbol is used for the healing of the soul--the level of the blueprint from which the physical body is derived.
