Arthritis is a disease that grips atleast one out of 10 people. Due to arthritis, there is an inflammation of joints. A person suffering from arthritis feels the pain, stiffness, redness, heat and loss of function in one/or more joints. Mostly affected joints are the spine, hips, knees, ankles & fingers. However, the most common forms of this disease are:

1. Osteo-Arthritis: The chronic degenerative conditions of bones gives rise to this kind of arthritis and it most can be seen in the middle and old age. It is related with the degeneration of articular cartilage of the weight bearing joints or the spur formation.

Causes:
  • Lack of exercises, wrong or heavy diet, calcium deficiency, being overweight, imbalance in the parathyroid function, mental & emotional stress and faulty lifestyle.

  • Wear and tear of the joint tissues or spur formations (over growth) is also some of the other causes.

  • Symptoms:
  • Arthritis is developed in joints when there is a history of injury in earlier life.

  • One can also notice stiffness and pain and even loss of elasticity in the joints.

  • 2. Gouty Arthritis: This chronic or acute form of arthritis is associated with gout. It is a metabolic disorder commonly found in old age due to deposition of uric acid in the joints.

    Causes:
  • This type of arthritis occurs, due to the excessive uric acid accumulated in the blood and the deposits of urates of sodium around the joints.

  • Food poisoning and heredity are also some of the other causes.

  • Symptoms:

  • One can find an increase in the uric acid level along with a tenderness, swelling or formation of a knot on the joints.

  • There can also be restricted and painful movements along with crystals in the joints.

  • Skin becomes tense, sensitive and warm along with a lot of pain, fever and headache.

  • However, the most susceptible part to be effected is the joint of the big toe.

  • In chronic cases, this disease even damages the kidneys.

  • 3. Rheumatoid Arthritis: This is a severe, crippling and rapidly progressive form of joint degeneration often found in young and middle-aged people, mostly more in women than in men. Inflammatory changes also bring about the structural deformities in this disease.

    Causes:
  • The specific cause of this disease is not known. However, there is a possibility that severe emotional shock can trigger it.

  • These changes in joints are related to an antigen-antibody reaction.

  • Symptoms:
  • This disease can rise due to thickening of articular tissue of joints.

  • Edema, congestion, swelling and initially vague pain, gradual swelling and redness are also a few symptoms.

  • However, later on the pain becomes more regular along with fever, morning stiffness, pain and tenderness, and swelling on both the sides of the joints.

  • If not properly attended, it can also lead to the destruction of joint tissue and deformities of joints.

  • Psychological disturbances are also found to aggravate the disorder.

  • However, apart from the physical symptoms, this disease also affects the mental state of the person, since the patient is usually nervous, tensed, worried, depressed and moody. They are also seen suppressing their anger and other symptoms.

    Treatments:
Diet: Take a simple and light diet, by avoiding sour fruits curd, pickles and spices. Eat fresh fruit and boiled pulses like moong. Avoid milk and dairy products. Auto urine therapy is also recommended.
