Hernia and Yoga
Hernia is the protrusion of any internal organ through an abnormal or weak opening. For example, due to the weakness of the abdominal wall, there can be the protrusion of the intestinal part of the body. Hernia usually can affect both sexes, but it is more common (2%) in British people. Some of the important types of hernia are as follows:

1. Inguinal Hernia: It is very common in men than women. About 70% of the hernia patients are suffering from inguinal hernia. It occurs when a part of abdominal viscera pushes into inguinal canal.

2. Femoral Hernia: It is found in 17% of the patients of hernia. It usually occurs in women. The bowel part (intestine) enters in to the front side of the thigh through femoral ring.

3. Umbilical Hernia: This type of hernia has its occurrence in about 8% of total hernias. The hernial sac bulges out at the umbilicus (navel) where abdominal muscles are weak. This hernia occurs at birth or in infancy or in obese people or middle aged having weak abdominal muscles.

4. Reducible Hernia:
Where the protruded sac can be pushed back inside the abdomen. It reduces itself when the person lies down, but re-emerges when it stands up.

5. Irreducible Hernia: It is a dangerous, life-threatening situation and needs surgical treatment. This occurs when protruded abdominal contents cannot be pushed back. The part may develop into gangrene or it may lead to even death. Therefore, it may be present even though the patient is not reporting pain.

Causes of Hernia:
(This goes along with all types of Hernias)

  • Congenital, weak condition of abdominal muscles (defect) due to poor development. It may occur due to sudden jerky movements while lifting the weight.

  • Increased intra abdominal pressure also contributes to hernia.

  • Long lasting cough, enlarged prostrate which obstructs passing of urine.

  • Constipation & flabbiness, due to lack of exercises and sedentary life style are also the causes.

  • Symptoms:
  • Pain, increased pressure and heaviness in abdominal area.

  • Patient becomes restless, since he is unable or stand, sit, walk or sleep comfortably.

  • Treatment:
The management will depend on its nature and severity. If the hernia remains in unreduced state, asanas cannot be done. After reducing it into abdomen following treatments can be done.

Asanas: Bhadrasana, Ardha-halasana, Viparitakarani, Pawanmuktasana, Yoga mudra, (in padmasana), Naukasana (in supine position), Setubandhasana, and Shavasana (for 20 minutes).
Other Practices: Uddiyana and Agnisara (mild and in supine position), Anuloma--Viloma Pranayama.
    Om recitation.
