Yoga For Indigestion, Constipation and Flatulence
1. Indigestion: Efficient digestive system is necessary for sound health. If the process of digestion is not complete the undigested food is fermented. Several symptoms like pain, belching, nausea, heartburn, acid regurgitation and accumulation of gas are experienced. This is called as indigestion.

2. Flatulence: It is the condition of distension of the stomach or colon due to accumulated gas. Excess production of gas or less absorption of gas in the gastro-intestinal tract may be relieved through the mouth or the anus.

3. Constipation: Difficult defecation that requires force to clear the bowels may be due to sluggish action of the bowels. This is known as Constipation. Generally two to three times bowel movements are considered as `normal` for the healthy individual. The bowel movements are not regular in constipated person.

Causes: (The causes are the same for all the three digestion problems).
  • Eating too much, too often or irregularly, incomplete chewing, lack of exercise, air swallowed unknowingly while eating and drinking, consumption of junk food are the causes.

  • Dull, enlarged & infected liver produces less quantity of bile.

  • Similarly, if the food is not chewed properly or ate under emotional stress and when laxatives are used too often, indigestion, constipation and flatulence is the result.

  • Weak intestinal musculature, improper digestion, worry, anxiety, fear, insomnia, sluggish alimentary canal, and sedentary life style are some of the other causes of indigestion, constipation and flatulence.


  • Symptoms:
  • Stomach or colon is distended due to excessive gas.

  • Gas passes out from mouth or anus.

  • There is a pain in stomach or uneasiness if the gas is not passed.

  • Bowels are not properly evacuated.

  • Stools may be dry and hard.

  • Anxiety, worries, belching, bad breathe, dyspepsia, headache, acidity are some of the associated symptoms.


  • Treatment:
    Kriyas: Laghoo Shankhaprakshalan, Kunjal, Vaman or Ganesh Kriya whenever necessary, Kapalbhati, Agnisara (mild) and Nauli after drinking warm water.
    Asanas: Pawanmuktasana, Vajrasana, (after meals for 10 minutes), Naukasana in prone position, Vipritakarani, Makarasana, Niralambasana, Shashankasana, Pad-hastasana and Shavasana.
    Pranayama: Anulom-vilom (10 rounds) & Suryabhedan (10 rounds).
    Om Recitation: 10 -20 times.
    Meditation: 10 -20 minutes
