Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disorder of carbohydrate metabolism. The normal fasting blood sugar level is 80 to 120 mg per 100 ml of blood. Anything above these norms can be considered to be a diabetic condition. When diabetes occurs in childhood it is known as Juvenile diabetes. Diabetes found in middle-aged people is known as Maturity onset diabetes. Diabetes is classified into
Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM) or type I; and
Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM) or type II diabetes.
Causes:
Since cause is not the infection due to any germ or virus, diabetes is also known as germless disorder.
However, most commonly understood causes are heredity, obesity, mental and emotional stress and strain, prolonged anxiety and conflict, sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise and wrong food habits.
Symptoms:
Main symptoms are, elevated blood sugar level (hyperglycemia), appearance of sugar in urine (glycosuria).
There is excessive urine production and hence frequent urination (polyuria).
Excessive hunger and thirst, itching especially of the genitals, weakness and debility, sweating, palpitation& also loss of weight.
However, in advanced stage there is nausea, headache, vomiting, eye disorders, tremor, dizziness, staggering, and acidosis due to excessive production of ketone bodies.
Coma (unconsciousness) is the last and the most advanced stage.
Treatment:
Diabetes is considered as an incurable disease but symptoms can be ameliorated. Along with the well-balanced diet, medicine and few other exercises, necessary corrections in lifestyle following yoga practices will help the patient to manage the disorder successfully. Patient should be educated about the overall situation and that the treatment should be continued for rest of the life. Conventional treatment consists of regulation of diet, insulin or other oral medicine, exercise and hygienic measures (like mouth and skin care). With this, one can lead a normal life.
Asanas: Sarvangasana or Viparita karani, Halasana, Matsyasana, Vakrasana or Ardha-matsyendrasana, Naukasana, Pavanmuktasana, Bhujangasana, Shalabhasana, Dhanurasana, Ushtrasana, Vrikshasana, Shavasana.
Kriyas: Neti, Vaman or Vastra dhauti, Kapalbhati, Nauli and Agnisara.
Pranayama: Anulom-Vilom, Ujjayi, Bhramari (minimum 10 rounds of each).
Om recitation: (10 rounds or more).
Meditation: (10 to 20 minutes).
